Sensory Integration and Regulation

From the moment we wake up until the moment we fall asleep (or lie awake trying to), our sensory system is constantly flooded with information. Some of this input is clear and obvious — like an alarm clock ringing or a bus hooting. Other sensory experiences, such as a door closing nearby, the faint smell of petrol, or the wind brushing against our face, often register in our body without us even realising it.

In sensory regulation work, we explore how everyday occupations and environments activate our sensory systems. I often describe this process as “building a dictionary of me.” It’s about learning to understand your senses — what feels soothing, what feels activating, and what feels triggering.

Through this awareness, you begin to truly know yourself, your needs, and your desires — paving the way for more meaningful participation in daily life.
